Flowers and Plants Promote Innovation and Ideas
in the Workplace

Alison Smyth of “Flowers Rock”, Rockhampton’s newest Florist, has done her
research and has discovered that adding nature to the workplace has huge
benefits not only to business but to the workers in the business.
Listen to any business expert and they will say that the key to gaining the competitive edge is that your employees are happy and feel part of your business leading to greater productivity.
Sometimes, these most obvious statements seem hard to implement, happiness and feeling a part of something is an emotional experience for everyone.
So, how can this be achieved?
A recent study by Texas A & M University suggests that “nature” holds a key to the secret of business success.
Their research indicates that workers’ will be more creative in problem solving, and introducing new ideas for business, is greatly increased by a workplace that includes flowers and plants.
“The research showed that the simple initiative of adding flowers to the work environment had dramatic improvements in people’s business productivity and from that it could probably be extrapolated that customers to the business would also feel more comfortable and open to business suggestions which could mean the difference between good business and great business” said Alison.
In a study that lasted eight months and commissioned by the Society of American Florists, the University studied if a link existed between “flowers & plants in the workplace” and “staff performance”.
The interesting results of this study indicated an increase in new and innovating thoughts, ideas and solutions to problems and opportunities among the staff whose workplace had flowers and plants as to workplaces that had none.
It was also found that male “employees” with flowers in the workplace had more ideas in regard to business than those without, while females were more creative and had alternative solutions to problems when plants and flowers were around them.
“It really comes as no surprise to me” said Alison, “that in sterile working environment with no elements of nature, that our own personal drive is subdued”.
“After all we are all part of nature, a spectacular sunset is something we all feel in awe of, as is walking along a deserted beach or climbing a mountain”.
“Take a bit of nature, some flowers, into your workplace and even though you may be surround by walls and technology it will ……. make you feel a whole lot better” Alison concluded.
